October 15, 2003: Calvin
Maduro, pitcher for the 2003 Bears, is co-sponsoring a celebrity
charity softball tournament on November 8 in Aruba. Calvin's
co-sponsors are Sidney Ponson, San Francisco Giants pitcher, and
Eugene Kingsale, Detroit Tigers center fielder. All three players are
Aruba natives. The tournament, which benefits Cas pa Huventud, a local
youth shelter, is preceded by a concert a week before, and will
feature appearances by Hall-of-Famers Eddie Murray and Brooks
Robinson, as well as players from the Yankees, Tigers, Orioles, and
Cubs.
Calvin is currently in
Cuba, pitching for The Netherlands' national team in the
35th Baseball
World Cup competition. (Aruba is an "independent entity" within
the Kingdom of The Netherlands.) In fact,
today he led his
team to a 12-0 victory over France! After the World Cup and making
his Aruba appearance, Calvin will be playing winter ball in Venezuela
for Las Aguilas del Zulia (news),
for whom he also played in 1998-99. (Check
out their roster for that season and see if you can find any other
Atlantic Leaguers!) Garry Maddox, Jr., late of the Camden Riversharks,
will be his teammate there this year.
